SCONE showed why it is Australia's equine capital at the weekend as the star attractions of the 26th annual Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival paraded through the town.

The festival began with a parade down Kelly Street on Saturday, featuring floats by schools and businesses, mounted police and riders from the 96 horse studs in the Upper Hunter.

The festival's committee president, Jo Bailey, said yesterday the parade was followed by a rodeo at White Park, where record crowds cheered on bull riders from around the country.

The festival continued yesterday with the Bob Skene League polo finals at the Scone Polo Club grounds.

Club secretary Emma Ridley said the league was designed to encourage new players, and to introduce young horses to the game.

There are more events planned in and around Scone until Sunday.

The Jack Johnston Memorial Gala day and the Scone and District Schools Horse Sports event will be held at White Park today and will include sheep dog trials and dressage.

The Scone Cup will be held on Friday, a B and S ball on Saturday, and there will be a fireworks display at Lake Glenbawn on Sunday.
