FOR Barry Shearman, of Fullerton Cove, the Tocal Field Days at C.B. Alexander Agricultural College are a successful way of spreading the word about his Boer goats.

The meat goat breed is popular in the Hunter and some producers export live animals to South-East Asia, where they are used to build herds in communities, providing food and a source of income.

Staying true to the needs of people on the land appears to be the secret of the highly popular field days weekend.

For the past 23 years, the college near Paterson has been the venue for visitors to get a close-up look at rural life.

Event manager Marie Williams estimated 28,000 people visited over three days, from Friday to Sunday.

There were about 400 stalls and exhibitors showcasing an array of Hunter produce and services, farming equipment, working dog trials and sheep shearing demonstrations.

Mrs Williams said the event had maintained a consistent service to the public.

"There are no showbags or dagwood dogs but we stay true to our core business," she said.
